Have you ever finished a particularly delicious apple and thought: What if instead of throwing these seeds away, I tried to grow something?
It’s a small thought, but it holds a big gesture… and yes, you really can sprout an apple tree at home!
You won’t get a perfect fruit-bearing tree (cultivated apple trees are almost always grafted), but you can grow a little tree that puts out leaves, maybe flowers – and above all, reminds you every day that patience has deep roots.
Here’s how to do it.nde.
🌱 Step 1: Choose your seeds and clean them well
. Eat the apple 🍏 and pick out 4–5 intact seeds (without cuts).
. Rinse them to remove any pulp (which could cause mold).
. Dry them carefully.
❄️ Step 2: The “winter trick” – stratification
In nature, an apple seed waits through the cold before sprouting. You need to simulate winter:
. Wrap the seeds in slightly damp (not soaked) paper towel.
. Place them in a sealed plastic bag or container.
. Store them in the fridge (in the less cold section, around 4°C / 39°F) for about 6–8 weeks.
. Check every 7–10 days to keep the paper moist and to make sure no mold appears.
During this time, the seeds “sleep” but start to wake up.
🌱 Step 3: The actual germination
When you see a small white root appear:
. Prepare small pots with soft, well-draining soil (a mix of potting soil and sand or perlite works well).
. Plant each seed about 1–2 cm deep, with the root pointing downward.
. Keep the pot in a bright place but out of direct sunlight.
. Water to keep the soil moist but not soggy.

🌿 Step 4: Growing together
After a few weeks, you’ll see the first leaves emerge.
. When the seedling has 4–6 true leaves, you can repot it into a slightly larger pot.
. In summer, if possible, move the young apple tree outdoors: direct light will help it thrive.
🍃 One more tip
Even if you won’t get apples identical to the “mother apple,” growing an apple tree from seed is an exercise in care, patience, and wonder.
If you have more space, you could also graft it in the future to get tasty fruit.

✏️ Why do it?
Because it’s a poetic gesture: turning a bite into a seedling.
Because growing is a form of meditation.
And because every time you look at your little plant, you’ll remember that even the smallest seeds hold entire trees.
