Do you know what a zoetrope is? It is a sort of pre-film animation device that produces motion illusion by displaying a sequence of drawings or photographs. It works because of the persistence of visions: the rapid succession of images gives the movement illusion.
Jessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg, founders of the design studio Nervous System of Somerville (Massachusetts), have been inspired by this idea and gave life to the Growing Objectscollection. These ‘objects’, whiche are 3D printed, are designed on the basis of algorithms taken from scientific theories, patterns taken directly from nature that when spinned, at full speed, seem to have their proper life.
The authors of this fascinating project were inspired by natural sciences, biology, the plant world and the complex organisms, so that Growing Objects is a mix of science, computer graphics, mathematical and digital fabrication.
