International Women's Day 2021: Our projects in Guatemala

Treedom has been working in Guatemala since 2018 with agroforestry projects with local partners like AMKA (an italian NGO founded in 2001).

Since 2009 AMKA has been promoting the role of indigenous women and the affirmation of their rights in Guatemala; they are thus well-informed about the local situation and the possibilities of evolution. AMKA and Treedom support the development processes led by the locals themselves and aim to orientate the abilities and local resources to improve living standards and a just future for all.

AMKA offers professional training and helps women create income-generating activities in the agricultural and livestock sectors, the main economic activities of the region. A permanent focus on education, and reflection among community members helps to tackle gender-based discrimination and to establish principles of equality and equal opportunity. The goal of this focus is to move toward full participation and integration of women in the community’s decision-making and socio-economic development.

AMKA and Treedom both believe that : “in order to promote the social and economic role of women, we must strengthen their potential and ability to contribute both to the improvement of living conditions within the family and the development of their communities.”

As the saying goes: “give someone a fish and you feed him for a day, but teach him to fish and you feed him for life”.

Treedom believes so much in this project that we are working with AMKA, this spring, on a special coffee planting project with 80 women in the Petatan region in order for them to form a cooperative.

Let’s support women in Guatemala so that they can sustain themselves and their families on par with the men of the region. Let’s help them build their cooperative and sell their coffee at a fair price.
