Tutti andiamo pazzi per i colori dell’autunno, ma quanti di noi sanno perché in questo periodo dell’anno le foglie diventano gialle, rosse e arancioni? Una domanda da bambini, nel senso che è solo apparentemente banale. ## Perché le foglie cambiano colore in autunno? Perché in inverno la vita diventa più difficile. Per proteggerci dal freddo, noi umani tiriamo fuori i maglioni dall’armadio, accendiamo il riscaldamento e mettiamo le scarpe pesanti. Gli alberi non possono farlo, ma si mettono al riparo in altri modi. Iniziano, piano piano, a ritirare la preziosa clorofilla dalle loro foglie. La clorofilla è il pigmento verde che, attraverso la fotosintesi, permette alle foglie di trasformare la luce del sole e l’acqua in zuccheri. Fanno le riserve. E senza la clorofilla, le foglie perdono il loro colore verde. ## Perché alcune foglie diventano gialle e altre rosse o arancioni? ![colorful-g50e449de1_1920](https://blog.treedom.net/hs-fs/hubfs/colorful-g50e449de1_1920.jpg?width=1066&name=colorful-g50e449de1_1920.jpg) Perché in assenza della clorofilla diventano visibili altre sostanze chimiche che finalmente possono avere il proprio quarto d’ora di celebrità: - il carotene, che tinge le foglie di giallo; - gli antociani, che le dipingono di rosso e viola. In questo modo le sostanze nutritive sono al sicuro nelle radici, e il panorama multicolore che amiamo tanto è servito. Quando non rimane più neanche una goccia di clorofilla, le foglie si seccano e cadono. Alle nostre latitudini, questo accade in autunno e inverno, ma non è così in tutto il mondo. Gli alberi tropicali, per esempio, si liberano delle loro foglie durante la stagione secca: vengono eliminate per limitare la traspirazione e conservare l’acqua disponibile.
